Young Barrow cricketers Dane good

A TALENTED bunch of young Barrow cricketers are just a step away from becoming the best in the land.

Dane Ghyll School’s Year 6 Kwik Cricket team were today in Derby for the national final of the Asda Kwik Cricket competition, having proven themselves the best in the north.

And the youngsters have prepared for their big day at the home of Derbyshire CC with a little help from someone who knows all about playing the game at the highest level – former Sussex and Durham wicketkeeper/batsman Martin Speight.

Organised by competition sponsors Asda, Speight held a coaching course with the team at Dane Ghyll on Monday, passing on tips and expertise in a bid to help them claim glory in the finals.

The Barrow team reached Derby with impressive displays at the Barrow, Cumbria and North of England finals.

The boys and girls reached the semi-finals in Cumbria, thus qualifying for the showdown with the best teams from Northumberland and Durham.

After coming through the group stages – where they played teams from Newker, Berwick and Gosforth – they scored a six-run victory over Cumbrian rivals Appleby in the semi-finals to reach the final against Northumberland champions Berwick Middle School.

This was another tough match, but thanks to superb bowling, gaining 10 Berwick wickets, Dane Ghyll ran out winners of the Northern competition, earning a place among the last 16 from the whole of England in Derby.

The most impressive performance at the regional final was the bowling of Sally Craig, who took two wickets for one run in her two-over spell.

Dane Ghyll have come through a competition which has seen all but 16 of more than 12,000 primary schools eliminated, and they will be hoping the first class coaching they received from Speight will help spur them on to greater success.

The Dane Ghyll team is made up of the following players: Meghan Turnough, Sally Craig, Jack Hill-Eades, Luke Mitchelle, Daniel Wright, Aiden Wright, Bradley Hamilton, Johnathan Hutton, Kristian Waite-Kemp and Jamie Hodgson.
