SOUTH Lakeland District Council is working with the Environment Agency and Booths Supermarket on a flood relief scheme for Windermere Road car park in Grange.
Booths have already received planning permission from the council for a new supermarket to be built on the existing Bateman’s Garage site next to the car park.
The details of the flood alleviation scheme have yet to be finalised, but it is likely to provide a new culvert system and for alterations to be made to the flood storage area. As part of the scheme, Booths have offered to dredge the pond at the Ornamental Gardens and make repairs to the walls of the pond and islands.
SLDC have agreed to a request from Booths Supermarket for a 35 year covenant on Windermere Road car park in Grange-over-Sands and so the proposed flood relief scheme can go ahead. The existing garage will be demolished and the layout of Windermere Road car park will be altered to increase the amount of parking spaces. Four coach parking spaces will be included and overall the spaces will increase to 113.
Councillor David Evans, portfolio holder for Resources, said: “The council is pleased we have been able to work with the Environment Agency and Booths on a flood relief scheme for this area of Grange-over-Sands, which has been prone to flooding in the past. I am confident that the scheme will be welcomed by businesses and residents who will reap the benefits of a much improved car park.”
Booths will be redesigning and refurbishing Windermere Road car park as part of their project to build a new supermarket on the site. SLDC will manage the car park as it does for other Booths supermarkets in the district.
Members of Grange Town Council have met with Booths to discuss the proposals and have offered their support.
