Schools sample the great outdoors

A COLLABORATIVE project has seen a school invite its neighbours into its great outdoors.

Ormsgill Primary and Nursery School is sharing its extensive grounds with children across Barrow.

The school, in Millbank, has been hosting outdoor learning activities for its pupils and children from other schools.

Ormsgill School has large grounds, with playing fields, wooded areas, and gardens, which it has been developing over the years to take advantage of learning opportunities.

An Extended Services grant has allowed visiting schools to take part in outdoor sessions at Ormsgill, including Forest Schools, which can involve den building, and making campfires.

They also take part in orienteering, mini beast sessions and 3D sculpture.

The schools who have joined Ormsgill School include St George’s CE Primary, Newbarns Primary, Barrow Island Community Primary, North Walney Primary, Brisbane Park Infants, Cambridge Primary, St Pius Catholic X, Vickerstown and Roose School.

Dawn Hubbold, a teacher at Ormsgill School who has been running the sessions, said: “We have such lovely grounds and we have been developing our outdoor learning spaces for quite a while.”

Mrs Hubbold said the school started the collaborative learning project with the other schools in June and they hope to do more sessions next term.

She said: “The children love being outdoors. They are working as a team and building relationships. It’s a chance for them to work in a different way.

“It’s been great to work with children and staff from other schools.

“The feedback has been very positive.”
