AN inspired bowling display from professional Pasan Wanasinghe saw Barrow to yet another win in the Northern League Division One.
The Sri Lankan produced figures of 6 for 45 in 18.5 overs as Dary Wearing’s in-form men triumphed at Preston by 26 runs.
The visitors were restricted to 161 all out with the bat – thanks in no small part to a knock of 67 from Darren Clark – but Wanasinghe helped dismiss the hosts for just 135.
Wearing himself took 3 for 51, with the other wicket a run out.
The victory keeps Barrow in second place in the table, behind only runaway leaders Leyland as they look forward to a weekend off.
In the North Lancs and Cumbria League, the season reached the halfway point, with Premier Division leaders Furness hanging on for a draw in their top-of-the-table clash against Keswick.
Keswick batted first at Furness Park and for some time the Furness bowling kept control.
But, with his side having lost four wickets, Glen Weightman came in and scored a very important 65. With 29 from Steve Hindmarch and 24 from brother Paul, Keswick were all out in the 50th over for 193.
Peter Lawson, with 4 for 54 and pro Niel Bredenkamp, with 3 for 48, were the main wicket takers.
Openers Glen Capstick, with 29, and Mike Gadsden, 21, gave Furness a steady start, but the middle-order failed, with the next five batsmen only getting 16 between them to put Keswick on top.
However, the Furness tail gave determined resistance, Paul Wilcock making 21 and Graham Capstick, 27 not out, and when Pete Lawson went for 12, it was left to Graeme and number 11 Jordan Buchanan, with 4 not out, to bat out the final overs for the draw.
Keswick professional Paul Hindmarch took 4 for 50 in his 15 overs, with good support from Dan Gaskell, with 3 for 30 in 15 overs, and Glen Weightman, who took 2 for 20 in 10 overs.
The results sees Furness’s lead in table is cut to four points.
Millom were at home to Kirkby, who batted first, but opener Paul New could find no-one to stay with him until Mike Etchells came in at number eight to play a typical innings.
They managed to give Kirkby a total to defend, New making 63 and Etchells 41, as they went to 159 all out. For Millom, Paul O’Callaghan took 3 for 33 in 11 overs and Robert Thompson 3 for 48 in five overs.
In reply, Millom went to a comfortable win at 160 for 2, professional Majeed Jehangir making 65 not out, Stuart Swallow 44, and Danny Mackie 23 not out .
Haverigg batted first at Cleator and, with 89 from professional Bazid Khan, were 196 for 6 at tea.
In reply, only professional Paul Duffett, with 37, caused the bowlers any problems. With nine wickets down, it was left to Dave Bell and skipper Dave Rooney to bat out the last 13 overs for the draw.
Bell was Cleator’s top-scorer with 39 not out, while Haverigg’s Steve Evans continued his excellent season, taking 6 for 49.
Vickerstown were at home to Whitehaven and, batting first, were 153 all out, Geoff Luxon making 51 and Gareth Benson 33. Whitehaven pro Ryan Butterworth took 3 for 31.
In reply, Whitehaven could find no answer to Vickerstown captain Gareth Benson, who had a bowling return of 8 for 32 as Whitehaven stumbled to 100 all out.
Steve Holliday top-scored with 27, as the Walney side went to their first win of the season.
Penrith will be disappointed at another losing performance at Workington.
Despite 44 from professional Upul Fernando, the north Cumbrians could only total 120 all out, Workington’s teenager Andy Ireland taking 5 for 25.
After tea, Workington struggled and were indebted to Martin Turner’s 37 not out, as they stumbled over the winning line at 121 for 7, Penrith pro Fernando taking 4 for 8.
The Cockermouth and Carlisle game saw almost 500 runs scored.
Gareth White led the way for Cockermouth as he made 105, with support from Andrew Davidson’s 51 in a total of 236 for 8. For Carlisle, Craig Foxcroft took 4 for 63.
In reply, the Cockermouth bowling was taken apart as Marc Brown continued his run-getting with 95 not out. Alex Raybould made 81 and Carlisle pro Saliya Saman 51 not out, as Carlisle went to a nine-wicket win at 240 for 1.
In Division One, Dalton were at home to close neighbours Lindal Moor, who took first knock.
With six players getting into double figures, the Moor went to 216, being all out in the 50th over. Mike Hughes, with 90, and opener Paul Clark, with 37, were Lindal’s top scorers, while John Bell, with 3 for 41 in his 15 overs, and Adam Gibson, with 3 for 44 in 12 overs, bowled well for Dalton.
Unfortunately for Lindal, Justin Quint was in good form and his innings of 90 gave Dalton a good platform. Along with 50 from Liam Curwen, Quint helped the home side to a good win at 219 for 4 in 43 overs.
In all the mayhem, John Atkinson returned a remarkable bowling analysis, bowling 15 overs, taking one wicket for only 30 runs.
At Askam, leaders Duddon SC won the toss and, batting first, gave Ulverston a hard afternoon in the field.
The Gribbin brothers, Liam and Lewis, gave the home team an excellent start, the first wicket falling with 76 on the board when Liam was run out for 39 after an excellent direct hit from Steve Drage.
The run scoring continued as Sam Alexander made a hard-hitting 35 and Lewis Gribbin eventually went for 85.
Still more good batting from Kris McLean, 62 not out, and the third Gribbin brother, Matthew, with 46 not out, saw Duddon go to 293 for 4 at tea.
Ulverston unfortunately had one of those forgettable days with the bat and were all out in the 23rd over for 70. Joe Alexander, with 6 for 35, Craig Crawford, 2 for 18, and Gary Stevenson, 2 for 12, bowled Duddon to an easy win.
Cleator II, batting first at Wigton, would be fairly happy after their 50 overs having posted 227 for 4, James Rogers making 99 and Wigton’s Steve Saunders taking 3 for 52.
In reply, Wigton’s batsmen went to a comfortable win 228 for 6, with Gerrard Jackson top-scoring with 69 as Wigton continue their push for promotion. It must have been a strange pitch at Appleby as Millom II were all back in the shed at 50 all out, with Derek Brown, brought out of retirement, scoring 26, over half of the total. Scott Clement, the Appleby pro, took 7 for 21 in 12 overs.
However, the pitch did not improve and Appleby Eden scrambled to 52 for 6, with Jake Pennington returning 5 for 37.
At Hawcoat Park, the home side ran up a big score against Lanercost, and were 318 for 4 at tea, Dave Muncaster, with 107, and Steve Thorburn, with 50, leading the way. Lanercost’s Jon Robley took 4 for 43.
While never approaching the runs needed, Lanercost were 192 for 8 when overs ran out. Robley completed his personal good day, top-scoring with 41.
Workington II batted first at Egremont and were soon five down with less than 30 on the board.
Good knocks from Dave Pearce, 43, Andrew Whinn, 36, and Adam Chambers, 23, pulled the innings round and Workington got to 148 all out. Egremont’s Richard Booth took 5 for 11 in 15 overs, with 11 maidens, and Shaun Bostock 3 for 49 in his 15 overs.
Egremont batted steadily, with seven of the top eight batsmen getting into double figures, Ron Looney top scoring with 40 as they went to the win at 152 for 7, their first of the season.
Paul McKeown continued his weekly wicket-taking for Workington II, returning 4 for 47.
