Golden Brown too hot for Haverigg as Seascale lift trophy

VIGODNY CUP FINAL

THE more experienced Seascale side proved too strong for the Haverigg youngsters in the Vigodny Cup final.

Batting first at St George’s Road, Millom, the Seascale openers found the Haverigg opening bowlers, Jamie Bickerdike and Craig Armstrong, hard to get away, but as the game progressed the Poolsiders’ attack found it difficult to contain the hard-hitting, Adam Brown, 54, Mike Fidler, 47, and Steve Brown jnr, 39 not out, from scoring freely.

During the first innings, umpire Terry Atkinson was struck on the knee by the ball and stumbled over, injuring his ankle in the process.

Paul Fieldhouse took over the umpiring duties for the remainder of the Seascale innings, before Atkinson returned for the second innings, and he will be back in action for the Furness v Workington game on Saturday.

The interruption did not stop the Seascale batsmen amassing a big total of 226 for 5 at tea. Armstrong was Haverigg’s outstanding performer with 2 for 24 in eight overs, and Bickerdike gave good support with 1 for 32 off his nine-over spell.

Losing a wicket to the first ball of their innings rocked Haverigg, and after playing in heavy drizzle for some time, play was suspended with them struggling on 42 for 4.

On the resumption of play, Michael Holmes and James Turner got the Haverigg score past the 100 mark.

Turner was then run out for 14 and Holmes was bowled for an excellent and sensible 53, being Pete Rooney’s first victim.

Haverigg’s tail wagged briefly, until Rooney took the last two wickets and Haverigg were 145 all out. Rooney grabbed 3 for 13 in five overs and Steve Brown snr, 3 for 19 in nine overs, the pair doing most damage for the triumphant West Cumbrians.

Millom’s Mayor and Mayoress, Doug and Fee Wilson, who had sponsored the final, had managed to fit attendance at the North Lancs League Division Two showpiece into their busy Civic Sunday schedule.

The Mayoress presented the cup to Seascale skipper, Steve Brown snr, medals to both winners and losers, and mementos to umpires Atkinson and Brian Blackburn, and to the scorers, Haverigg’s Laurence Lupton, and Seascale’s Tom Hogg.

Derek ‘Diddy’ Brown, of Millom CC, was the man-of-the-match adjudicator and he chose Seascale’s Adam Brown and presented him with the award.

The hosts for the final, Millom CC can be very proud of their efforts, especially the tea ladies.

With so much rain falling nearly all week, groundsman Stephen Gill deserves every congratulation for the pitch he had managed to prepare.

Haverigg chairman Gary Postlethwaite said: “We were beaten by the better side on the day.

“ I think they probably had the best of the weather, but we’ve got no complaints. But at least we got to the final, and it was a good experience for the young lads.”
