Carlisle haulier Stobart wins £25 million a year Tesco contract

Cumbrian haulage giant Eddie Stobart has landed a contract with Tesco worth about £25m a year.
The Carlisle-based transport firm has been awarded a distribution deal taking goods from a huge new import centre in the north east, it was announced today.
The contract will see the company’s distinctive trucks move non-food products from the centre to distribution centres and stores across the country.
The goods will at first arrive by sea and rail at the import centre, at Teesport, Middlesbrough.
The trucks will begin rolling with the new work next month, the firm confirmed.
Andrew Tinkler, chief executive of Stobart Group, of which Eddie Stobart Ltd is a part, said: “Tesco and Stobart started working with each other nearly five years ago.
“Both organisations share a joint vision of maximising load fill to reduce empty road miles.
“This major new contract gives us the potential to increase movements from road to rail, minimising disruption to UK roads and providing an environmentally friendly solution.”
The news comes only days after it was revealed Eddie Stobart’s haulage depot at Kingstown in Carlisle could move to Carlisle Airport as soon as next spring.
Stobart Group acquired the airport for £14m in May and now has planning consent for a major redevelopment.
This will include 387,500sq ft of warehousing, a four-storey office block, chilled dock, gatehouse, canteen and parking.
Phase one, the warehousing for Eddie Stobart, should start this summer for completion by March 26, 2010.
But Stobart Group’s board has warned its shareholders that the airport plans could be delayed by another legal challenge.
Gordon Brown, a farmer who lives opposite the airport, is seeking a judicial review of Carlisle City Council’s decision to grant planning consent to the plans.
